Brief description of the course

The course focuses on developing independent language use and preparing students for a wider range of communicative situations in both everyday life and academic contexts. Students work with various types of spoken and written texts dealing with social, cultural, and current topics. Through these materials, they practise understanding texts, identifying relevant information, summarising content, and expressing and justifying their views clearly. Grammar instruction covers higher-level B1 structures, including various past and future tenses, the conditional mood, reported speech, the use of pronouns, and cohesive devices that contribute to textual coherence. Particular attention is paid to the application of these structures in both spoken and written communication. Oral activities include discussion, description, participation in dialogues, and the delivery of short presentations. In written expression, students learn to produce coherent opinion texts, descriptions, and summaries, with an emphasis on logical organisation and linguistic accuracy. The pre-requisite for the registration is B1.1 level in Italian.

Learning outcomes in the course

Upon completing the course the student:
- understands the main ideas of spoken texts delivered in standard Italian on familiar and general-interest topics and is able to follow conversations conducted at a normal pace;
- understands different types of short texts, such as articles, opinion pieces, and descriptions, identifying the main information and key viewpoints they contain;
- uses vocabulary and grammatical structures appropriate to the B1.2 level, including various past and future tenses, the conditional mood, reported speech, and pronouns, to express ideas clearly and coherently;
- produces descriptive, narrative, and simple argumentative texts and is able to justify opinions on everyday, social, and cultural topics;
- participates in conversations and discussions using communication strategies appropriate to the situation;
- demonstrates familiarity with the main features of Italian culture and society and takes into account conventions of Italian language use and cultural norms in communicative situations.
