Course aims
To give an overview of the origin and development of Estonian folk and professional music. To get acquainted with the works of significant Estonian composers and the remarkable achievements of Estonian interpreters. Organisations directing the development of Estonian music culture.
Brief description of the course
Introduction to Estonian folk music. The development of music culture in Estonia before the 19th century. The rise and progress of Estonian national music culture in the second half of the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century. Music culture in Estonia in the 1920s and 1930s. Estonian music culture after World War II. Breakthrough of new music language in the late 1950s. Estonian music in 1970s and 1980s. Music in the re-established Republic of Estonia.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
Student who passes the course knows the 20th century Estonian music culture and is able to find materials relevant to professional music.
