Course aims
To provide an overview of the main styles and trends of 19th and 20th century music and their characteristics. To introduce different genres and their development, new compositional techniques and methods, most significant composers, schools etc.
Brief description of the course
Romanticism - principle style of the 19th century. Its main features. Division into periods. Program music. Hierarchy and specifics of various genres. Music and nationalism. The relevant music styles of the first part of the 20th century: impressionism, expressionism and new classicism. Avant garde music in the middle of the 20th century: total serialism, electronic music. Postmodernism - the 1960s and ´70s. Aleatoric music. Open form. Introduction to the innovative trends in the last quarter of the 20th century: computer music, minimalism etc.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- is able to talk and discuss on topics associated with course program;
- knows musical terminology,;
- is able to recognize different styles of music by hearing;
- knows the most important works.

Kirjanduse läbitöötamine ja omandamine (3 lugemisseminari ettevalmistava veebipõhise vormiga koos kollektiivsete aruteluga, kirjalik eksam); muusika äratundmine (3 kuulamistesti); muusikaloo didaktika omandamine (koostada DigiÕppeVaramu taoline materjal: TELL/SHOW/ASK, 2–3 üliõpilast); ühisettekanne Digimaterjali tutvustamiseks (2–3 üliõpilast).
