Course aims
To develop basic knowledge and skills in drawing, painting and composition and the ability to apply them in studio practice; and to develop the ability to generate artistic ideas, develop and visually express them, and analyse and interpret artworks.
Brief description of the course
The course is based on the foundations of drawing, painting and composition. Students practise basic elements, techniques, tools and papers in drawing; draw from observation, including still life, skeleton, skull, portrait and hands; and consolidate observation, proportion and form. In painting they focus on perceiving the world through colour, the use of opaque paints, the relation of colour, form and space, organisation of the picture surface, proportion, rhythm and depiction of materials, including portrait painting. In composition they study the management of artistic wholeness through density, value, light and shadow, colour, contrast, detail and generalisation, focus, repetition, rhythm, metaphor and symbolic meaning, and the relation of the work to temporal, spatial and cultural context. Independent work includes drawing, painting and composition assignments and the development and finishing of creative work.
