Course aims
To create possibilities for students to study the options of Estonian as a second language or the options of multilingual learning and organising educational activities for children with different mother tongues in a preschool child care institution, to implement the methods of Estonian as a second language or multilingual teaching (including immersion) and to get to know the principles of monitoring children’s linguistic development.
Brief description of the course
Student:
1) Compiles a schedule for the professional placement;
2) Gets to know the working order of a kindergarten group and learning Estonian as a second language;
3) Observes and analyses the educational activities organised by the teacher(s) (team planning, how teachers teaching in different languages complement one another’s activities, the role of music and movement teachers in organising multilingual educational activities);
4) Observes and analyses the study environment created in the group as well as the tools that support the children’s linguistic development;
5) Plans, organises, and analyses educational activity in co-operation with the group’s teacher(s); upon planning an activity, takes into account the children’s individuality and developmental needs;
6) Prepares a learning game or tool for language learning activities;
7) Learns about the monitoring principles of the linguistic development of multilingual/immersion group’s children;
8) Completes the assignments arising from the schedule, leads children’s games, organises games involving movement for children outdoors and the activity of children; participates in the child care institution’s events and meetings;
9) Compiles a self-analysis.
Throughout the entire professional placement, the student shall complete their professional placement portfolio that includes their activities during the professional placement.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- analyses the educational activity organised by the supervising teacher;
- can compile a working schedule, taking into account the group’s peculiarities, the study programme’s objectives and integration between the subjects;
- can select methods suitable for teaching and learning based on the objectives, using relevant literature and tools for teaching Estonian as the second language (suitable for kindergarten’s immersion);
- can plan, implement, and analyse educational activities;
- can analyse the environment and tools created for learning Estonian as the second language or in multilingual studies;
- can implement methods and age appropriate games that support language learning;
- givs an overview of the principles and assessment methods for monitoring the linguistic development of multilingual or immersion group’s children;
- can plan, assess, and reflect on their own work.
