Course aims
To support the understanding and overview of the cultural history of German speaking countries and their current developments.
To support the understanding of developments in German speaking countries today through the knowledge of key events in their history. To show the links between German cultural history and Estonian culture. Support the ability to analyse texts and link them to the historical context.

Brief description of the course
The notion of Culture.
Reformation, Baroque and Enlightenment, 19the Century developments, the change of century, 20th Century wars and changes in political regime.
The story of Austrian-Hungarian monarchy. the choices of Switzerland (Swiss Confederation).
Select biographies of important cultural / historical figures of German speaking countries.
Estonia and German speaking cultural space.
A student may miss a maximum of 6 classes, if this is exceeded the student should contact lecturer for additional individual work to compensate for the classes missed.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- is familiar with the main stages of the development of Cultural history of the German speaking countries in relation to the historical periods covered during the course;
- knows in depth one significant cultural figurehead or notion/issue in the cultural history of the German speaking countries (report);
- has dealt in depth with one literary image.
