Course aims
To develop skills for language editing of different texts, incl. translated texts, to give an overview of general principles of editing and proofreading.
Brief description of the course
Principles of editing. Specifics of content and language editing of different text types (non-fiction, newspaper, magazine, fiction, and academic texts). Cooperation with the author and layout designer of the text. Practical editing of the texts. The characteristics of editing translated texts: relationships between the translated and original languages, authors style and differentiation of foreignisms as well as translation errors and avoiding them.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has skills for editing language, as well as the content of different types of text. Can find and check facts and is able to justify his/her corrections, can use different programs for editing and knows the ethical issues connected with editing process;
- is familiar with the characteristics of editing of translated texts, recognizes the influence of a foreign language on Estonian texts and is able to avoid it;
- can evaluate the functional and terminological adequacy of the translated text. Evaluates the translated texts and based on practical work writes a paper about most common mistakes in English-Estonian translations.
