Course aims

To create a systematic overview of Estonian syntax and lexicon; to develop student's ability to analyze Estonian sentences.

Brief description of the course

The course covers the following topics. Ways of describing syntactic structure; sentence and their constituent parts, grammatical relationships and functions; basic structure of a context-free elementary clause: parts of a sentence and non-part elements of sentences; communicative sentence types; syntactic processes; complex sentence. Meaning and the lexicon; components and prototypes; meaning variation: polysemy, homonymy, vagueness; lexical and semantic relation.
Practical syntactic and lexical-semantic analyzes of the natural language use will be exercised.

Learning outcomes in the course

Upon completing the course the student:
- interprets and uses terminology of syntax and lexicology correctly;
- has knowledge of the Estonian sentence structure and lexicon;
- can define key terms;
- analyzes sentences using phrase structure grammar as a method, recognizes the construction of a sentence constituent and its syntactic function;
- analyzes the natural language use from the lexical-semantic viewpoint.
