Course aims
The course provides basic knowledge of classifying and interpretation of phonologic and inflectional facts as well facts concerning word-formation, and proficiency in applying it to practical phonetic, phonological and morphological analysis.
Brief description of the course
Orthographies and transcriptions. Phonetic and phonological transcription. Letters and diacritics. The phonological interpretation of segmental and prosodic components of the sound system. Syllable types. Stress foot. Theory of segmental quantity degree. The essence of quantity degree.
An introductory linguistic-typological overview of the grammatical means used in languages. An analysis of Estonian morphophonology and morphological categories. Classification of Estonian parts of speech and morphological inflectional types.
Word-formation strategies. System of word-formation in Estonian, semantic groups of derivation suffixes and compounds,, word-formation patterns.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- is acquainted with the main concepts and terms of phonetics and phonology;
- has an overview of phonetic, phonological, inflectional and word-formation system of Estonian language;
- has a systematic overview of Estonian morpho-phonological and morphological methods and they can use it in practical analysis.
- can analyze derived words and compounds according to word-formation principles and patterns.
