Course aims
The purpose is to provide the theoretical knowledge about historical developments, defining features and specifics of documentaries. Also to develop students’ analyzing skills and critical approach to non-fiction films.

Brief description of the course
This course is designed as an introduction to creative documentary. Screenings of internationally celebrated films in history, and also of Estonian films are included. Through viewing and analysing numerous films, the students will acquire knowledge about the historical developments, defining features and specifics of documentaries. Exploring the complexities of these films also helps to develop creative skills and a critical approach to non-fiction films. Students’ independent work is to write the analyses and essays.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has acquired the theory and concepts of historical developments, defining features and specifics of documentaries.
