Course aims
The course aims to enable students to understand the development and roll of visual culture in the ancient and medieval society.
Brief description of the course
Attention will be given to analysing art in its context in Ancient Egypt, Greek and Rome, and to comparing the visual language of pagan and Christian culture. Special attention will be paid to the spatial features of church buildings, the role of the monasteries in the development of architectural environments and the working principles of the medieval master builders.
The lectures will be given in the form of a dialogue that allows students to test their skills.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
The student has a comprehensive overview of the history of art in Ancient societies, and is aware of its most characteristic features.
The student can put the different objects of ancient and medieval art history in their contemporary context and in some case even analyze their impact to the present art history.
