Course aims
Overview of Europe in Middle Ages (5th –10th century) with the emphasis on the connections between culture, society and mentality.
Brief description of the course
Understanding of the place of the early middle-ages from A. Gibbon to H. Pirenne. The impact of the Pirenne Thesis for the development of modern understanding of the period. Current tends in historiography (I. Wood, P. Brown, B. Rosenwein, R. Mc Kitterick, C. Wickham). Crisis of the Ancient Rome: economy and political structure. Rise and spread of christianity, its impact on Roman society. Barbars on the frontier of Roman society. Barbar invasion. Barbar states on the territory of Ancient Rome. Devision of Ancient Rome into two parts. Diverse development of the Eastern and Western Rome. Development of the Byzantinum. Rise of Islam and its expansion. British Isles after Roman rule. Invasion of the Anglo-Saxons. Anglo-Saxon society. Viking phenomenon and its impact. Franks. Merovingian dynasty. Clovis. Charlemagne. the Carolingian Renaissance. Rise of the Papacy.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
Oskab hinnata antiigist keskaega üle mineku majanduslikke ja ideoloogilisi põhjusi. Valdab põhilist kronoloogiat. Suudab analüüdida transformatsiooniperioodi käsitlusi 18. sajandist kaasajani ning tuua esile nende nõrku ja tugevaid külgi.
