Course aims
Gain knowledge of the basics of epidemiology to find connections between health and behavior and be able to use health statistics and health research databases in Estonia. Factors and behavior that influence health. Students learn the reasons and symptoms of more frequently occurring diseases, their prevention, and first aid for teaching their specialty. Students get the know-how of first aid for dangerous conditions and poisonings.
Brief description of the course
The subject deals with the basics of epidemiology for finding connections between health and behavior. Data sets related to health and health behavior are discussed.
The development of human organ systems and their functions at different periods of life are discussed. The basics of disease prevention. Practical exercises in the prevention and treatment of injuries and diseases. Obesity, health, diseases. Circulatory and blood diseases. Exercise therapy and physical activity for various diseases. Respiratory system diseases. Digestive diseases and urinary excretory system diseases. Injuries of the musculoskeletal system. Skin diseases, sexually transmitted diseases, excretory system diseases, and nervous system diseases.
First aid in case of emergency medical conditions (analysis of special cases in seminars!) Group work: practical life-saving first aid exercises, seminars.
Individual work: work with health statistics and health information databases, calculation tasks, work with literature; group work: sample exercises for providing first aid.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- knows the basics of epidemiology, the principles of finding connections between health and diseases, and can use health information and health statistics databases
- knows the causes of the most common diseases, the principles of prevention and first aid, and how to avoid diseases;
- has the knowledge and skills to provide emergency first aid in accidents.
