Course aims
Students will get the knowledge and skills for Drug Prevention (universal and selective prevention, „settings“ approach).
Brief description of the course
Drug prevention strategies. ESPAD etc. Addictive behaviour. Gateway drugs. Motivation. Protective factors. Smoking, alcohol, drug addiction. Myths and attitudes. Peer pressure and addictive behaviour. Critical life skills in drug education: how to say “no”, managing feelings, objectives in life. Short and long term effects of addiction to all aspects of health: physical, emotional, ethical, intellectual, social, personal. Basic knowledge for school drug education. Best practice: interventions, EDDRA. Addiction problems and how to get help. Peer education programmes.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- is able to demonstrate an understanding of new approaches to drug prevention;
- can separate myths from facts with regards to smoking, alcohol and drug abuse;
- demonstrates critical life skills in (second level);
- can explain how drug addiction affects different aspects of health: physical, intellectual, emotional, social, ethical and personal;
- can choose an effective drug prevention strategy for school setting.
