Mechanism of muscular contraction. Leverage systems. Passive components of muscular system and their role in alteration of its function. Adaptation, hypertrophy and hyperplasia. Muscle pain. Detraining. Body defense systems. Components of nonspecific body defense system. Immune system. Immunological memory. Allergy. Physical load and catching cold. Thermal regulation. Thermal balance of the body. Adaptation to cold and warm environment. Shivering and non-shivering thermogenesis. Characterization of sweat glands. Composition of sweat and need for restoring of electrolytes. Re-hydration, composition of sports drinks and requirements of the body. Appetite and mechanisms of regulation.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- knows the functions underlying work capacity, distinguishes between the principles of endurance development and strength-speed training;
- understands the nature of functional and non-functional fatigue;
- can relate the stress response to the three areas of acclimatization (time, temperature and altitude);
- knows the nature of the body's defense mechanisms and their relationship to diseases and their relationship to the training process;
- understands the relationship between the immune system, allergic reactions, and physical exertion;
- can independently, safely and effectively measure functional characteristics.
