Course aims
Create prerequisites for acquiring knowledge and skills in qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis methods to be applied in sports, recreation and physical education research.
Brief description of the course
Comparison of qualitative and quantitative methods. Formulation of research questions and research planning. Ethical issues of research. The main characteristics of qualitative research, interview and observation as a method of collecting material and related epistemological and methodological problems. Qualitative content analysis. An overview of various quantitative research methods, research design, data collection, questionnaires, descriptive statistics, group comparisons, correlational analysis, and presentation of results.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- knows and understands the basic concepts of qualitative and quantitative research;
- can distinguish between quantitative and qualitative research;
- can identify the design, content and ethical issues involved in qualitative research;
- is able to read methodology, descriptive statistics and main results from research articles;
- can use the main qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis methods;
- can formalize the results of qualitative and quantitative analysis.
