Course aims
This course aims to introduce students to qualitative data collection and data analysis methods, particularly as applied in the field of sport, recreation and physical education.
Brief description of the course
Comparison of qualitative and quantitative methods. Basic characteristics of qualitative research. Formulation of research questions and research design. Ethical issues in research. Methods of material collection and analysis and related epistemological and methodological problems. Interview and observation as a qualitative data collection method. Qualitative content analysis. Work with literature. Writing a research report.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- is able to identify and understand main concepts in the qualitative research process;
- makes distinctions between the differences in quantitative and qualitative research methods;
- can identify the design, content and ethical issues involved in qualitative research;
- can identify main data collection and data analysis methods in qualitative research;
- can design qualitative research studies.
