Course aims
To provide an overview of children´s development stages and health indicators, and risk factors of child´s health. To inform students of the basics of child care and health promotion among children and parents. To introduce students to the main symptoms of various common children´s diseases and strategies to be implemented when a child in a group falls ill.
To provide an overview of the basics of child protection, related legislation and implementing acts, different projects and programmes carried out by national and different non-profit organisations.

Brief description of the course
General concepts of health, health promotion, illness and child welfare. Factors influencing child’s health.General and specific prevention of disease. Immunisation. Frequent disease groups among Estonian children, main indicators of falling ill. Characteristics of various disease groups, first aid in case of single symptoms. Simpler steps in giving first aid. Prevention of accidents. Physical activity and health.
An essay: Health education among children of a certain age group. Trauma prevention project in a preschool educational establishment. The development of child protection in the world and Estonia. Legislative acts supporting the protection of children and its implementation. Crisis in child’s life and possible help. Children’s and family policy in Estonia. Child protection at a national and local level. The role of different organizations and NGOs in child protection.

Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
Has knowledge in the main indicators of children’s health; can develop healthy behaviour in children; can teach children simpler self-aid skills in case of accidents; has knowledge in children’s rights and its introduction methodologies to children and their parents
