Course aims
To create opportunities for receiving an overview of children’s educational and developmental environments and child’s interaction with different educational environments (home and kindergarten environment); to support student’s readiness to create a supportive environment for 1-8-year-old children’s learning and development
To develop student’s skills to analyse different developmental environments.
Brief description of the course
Children and their growing and development environments. Key concepts. Various theoretical approaches. U. Bronfenbrenner, K. Gergen, D. Stern. Children under the age of three and their growing and development environment at home. The role of the family in directing the development of their children. Family sociology. Types of non-home childcare. Parents and siblings. Grandparents and children’s interaction with them. Relatives. Growing environment in kindergarten. Teacher-child and child-peer interaction.
Development environment in kindergarten and factors facilitating and inhibiting development. Quality of work of a child care institution. The role of kindergarten in contemporary society. Peers and interaction with them outside kindergarten. The child and the media. Learning environment. Physical environment. Facilities. Programme Hea algus [Step by Step].
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
Knowledge of factors affecting the growing environment;
Ability to analyse and evaluate a child’s growing environment;
Ability to adjust the growing environment in accordance with a child’s needs.
