Course aims
- to introduce basic concepts of diaspora studies;
- to present a survey in all three waves of Russian emigration with an emphasis on the 20th century Russian émigré culture;
- to present the current situation with using Russian outside Russia, Russian language in Estonia, and global Russians.
Brief description of the course
Basic concepts of migration, transnationalism and diaspora studies. Waves of Russian emigration. First wave: causes, centers, literary output. Major cultural centers, émigré periodicals. Russian literature and culture of Estonian Republic 1918-1940. Second wave: some literary contacts between post-War and pre-War émigrés. Third wave: its major representatives in literature and arts. Current situation with using Russian outside Russia. Russian language in Estonia. Global Russians and local and transnational online communities.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- knows and understands basic concepts of migration and diaspora studies;
- knows main facts and trends of all three waves of Russian emigration;
- understands the current situation with using Russian outside Russia, Russian language in Estonia, and global Russians.
