Course aims
- Introduce the EU and its core institutions, principles and mechanism
- Give an overview of international organizations that constitute global governance
- Understand that these organizations are created by and for the Western nations
Brief description of the course
The course offers basic knowledge of the principles of the EU institutions set-up, procedures, the decision-making process and the main policy subjects, also of EU enlargement. Next to this the student will be introduced to a critical reading on the EU, its norms and values, and influence and role in global politics.

The course also introduces the basics of other international organizations and their relations to states and to each other.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has learned about the historical development of the European Union;
- has an understanding the institutions and institutional system of the European Union;
- has gained knowledge and understanding of the main policy fields of the European Union;
- understands the EU’s position in the world as a norm creater, defender and breaker;
- has learnedabout the basics of global governance;
- knows, how is constituted by a net of international organizations and actors.
