Course aims
To increase the ability to find relevant data for student studies and increase the capability to interpret critically available numerical information and create new information out of databases.
Brief description of the course
Topics to be covered:
Stat wars: social statistics as a weapon. Soft facts. Small lie, big lie and statistics.
How to interpret data?
How to manipulate numbers? Data quality. Apples and oranges: improper comparisons.
Data presentation
How to find relevant data? Estonian databases
How to use thematic maps application
International databases and using the data
Individual level data: International Social Survey Project (ISSP), European Social Survey (ESS), Labour Force Survey (LFS) and using the data
Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE), European Quality of Life Survey (EQLS) and using the data
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- can assess the quality of a data source;
- notices & recognizes the data misuse;
- has increased information and ability to look for relevant databases and data;
- has familiarized him/herself with the main databanks in Europe and in Estonia;
- is able to present descriptive statistics.
