Course aims
To give an overview of the main processes and key topics in Estonian society and politics through sociological and political science perspective. To develop capability to discuss about main issues in Estonian society and politics.
Brief description of the course
Historical development of Estonian society – post-communist transition; stratification and social inequality; labour market and social problems; educational system and policy; ethnic relations and integration issues; gender equality, civil society and political participation; political culture and social values; migration and transnationalism; political parties, party system and world-view choices/options.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- Understands basics of the development of Estonian society and political institutions, its specificities;
- Knows general developments in significant areas of Estonian society and politics, such as stratification, migration, ethnic relations, civil society, labour market, party system, social values, etc.;
- Is able to do a basic comparison between developments in Estonian society and politics with those of neighbouring countries;
- Understands relevant sociological and political science concepts and knows how to apply them in the analysis of Estonian society and politics (for example in the analysis of social stratification, political culture, transnationalism, etc.);
- Is able to see various problems and conflicts in today’s Estonian society and politics and develop an informed and critical conversation on these topics;
- Is able to independently and academically analyse some problems of Estonian politics and society and based on this write a short focused essay.
