Course aims
Form knowledge of the main concepts, classifications, schools and theories of clinical psychology in the formation and treatment of psychic disorders seen from the historical perspective until the present day.
Give an overview of different psychic disorders while the problems in the work of a clinical psychologist are presented on one hand as functional and on the other hand as corresponding to the classification. Give an overview of the possibilities and current state of psychological help in Estonia.
Brief description of the course
The structure of clinical psychology. Problems of normality. Study and diagnosis of psychic disorders. Biological-medical model. Mood disorders. Schizophrenias. Dissociative disorders. Organic and substance-caused psychic disorders. Mental retardedness. Development-related disorders. Personality disorders. Habit and impulse disorders. Common elements of therapies. Independent work: case study.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- knows the systematic approaches and classification grounds of psychic disorders in history and at the present day;
- is able to determine different psychic disorders based on diagnostic features, incl. in a case study;
- knows the general treatment principles of psychic disorders.
