Course aims
Provide an overview of the Psychology of Learning and Teaching.
Brief description of the course
The course provides an overview of the psychological foundations of learning and teaching, addressing cognitive, social, and motivational processes and their development. It examines the learning process and individual differences, as well as various teaching methods from both historical and contemporary perspectives. Special attention is given to learning skills—their psychological prerequisites, including beliefs, emotions, and motivation related to learning - as well as cognitive, metacognitive, and motivation-related strategies. The course explores the development of learning skills across different age groups and analyzes intervention studies to understand their practical applications in educational settings. Additionally, discussions focus on how knowledge of learning and teaching can help create more effective learning environments and support learner development.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- understands contemporary perspectives on cognitive, social, and motivational processes related to learning, as well as their developmental characteristics across different age groups;
- can describe the learning process and individual differences associated with it;
- is familiar with various teaching methods and can evaluate their suitability for different learners;
- has an overview of key factors related to learning skills, including beliefs, emotions, and motivation;
- understands cognitive and metacognitive learning strategies and can apply them appropriately based on learner characteristics;
- recognizes the developmental aspects of learning skills and their specific features, including in the context of learners with special educational needs;
- has an overview of different approaches to developing learning skills and their practical applications.
