Course aims
The objective of the course is to develop value judgements supporting healthy lifestyle and to create the preparedness for their communication. The course aims to provide an overview of the main concepts, theories, models and national as well as international strategies of health behaviour and health promotion. The course gives an overview of development of health promotion in Estonia. To be aware of the possibilities and practices of evidence-based interventions in Estonia and internationally, of their implementation on national, community and individual level and of the evaluation of intervention programmes. The goal is to obtain skills for defining the problems related to health behaviour and project-based planning of interventions.
Brief description of the course
As part of the course, an overview is given of the main concepts, theories, models and national as well as international strategies when promoting health behaviour, and of their development in Estonia. During the course, introduction is provided about the Estonian health promoting networks: health promoting hospitals, health promoting workplaces, pre-school institutions and schools, safe communities. The principles of planning, financing and implementing health promoting programmes/strategies on national, community and individual level and the evaluation of intervention programmes are dealt with.
As part of the course, an overview is given of the possibilities and practices of evidence-based interventions in Estonia and internationally in the following areas of health behaviour: nutrition and physical activity, oral health; the promotion of children’s and young people’s health, mental health, sexual behaviour and the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases; use and prevention of excessive use of alcohol, tobacco and other addictive substances, prevention of injuries, the use of health services.
In order to implement practical skills of influencing health behaviour, the problem related to health behaviour needs to be defined, intervention that has proved to be effective has to be chosen and activities and necessary resources need to be planned on a project basis.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has knowledge of main concepts, theories, models and national as well as international strategies of health behaviour and health promotion and of health promoting networks;
- has knowledge of the factors influencing health and the basics of epidemiology and has knowledge of the principles of interventions, their planning, implementation and evaluation of their effectiveness in the main areas of health behaviour on national, community and individual level;
- has ability to plan project-based activities aimed at changes in health behaviour.
