Course aims
To give an overview of the development of one of the oldest branches of applied psychology, i.e. school psychology, and of contemporary trends in both international and Estonian school psychology.
To introduce the role of the school psychologist.
To give an overview of the special educational needs of pupils and the needs and possibilities of assisting pupils according to the role of the school psychologist.
Brief description of the course
Overview of the history of school psychology in the international context and the development of school psychology in Estonia.
Overview of trends in school psychology.
Regulation of the profession of school psychologist.
Basic tasks of the school psychologist, including assistance to pupils with special educational needs.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- knows the development of school psychology as one of the oldest fields of applied psychology in the international context and in Estonia;
- is familiar with contemporary trends in school psychology in the international context;
- knows the prerequisites for working as a school psychologist, the rights and duties associated with the profession, and the basic tasks of the job;
- knows the possibilities for assessing the factors influencing pupils' development and coping, knows how to choose the assessment method according to the factors to be assessed and the target group;
- knows how to support pupils' development and coping; knows how to select interventions according to the needs of the target group.
