Course aims
The goals of the subject are:
To provide a thorough overview of concepts connected with the quadratic curves;
To teach to use various methods of analytic geometry in order to solve different problems;
To provide the mathematical theory of quadratic curves.
Brief description of the course
Concepts of a pencil and bundle of straight lines, circles and planes. Conic sections, their polar equations. General equations of quadratic curves. Simplifying the general equation of a quadratic curve by translation or rotation of the frame. Invariants of quadratic curves. Conjugate diameters and directions, asymptotic directions and main directions of quadratic curves. Tangents of quadratic curves. Simplification of general equations of quadratic curves by the eigenvalue problem.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- knows main concepts connected with quadratic curves;
- is able to use these concepts in order to simplify the general equation of a quadratic curve.
