Course aims
Students have solid foundation of mathematical knowledge in the area of numbers and operations. To acquire basic knowledge about the methods for solving equations and inequalities. Students have solid foundation of mathematical knowledge for teaching school mathematics in the area of equations, systems of equations and inequalities.
Brief description of the course
Numbers and Operations: students understand basic concepts of numbers and operations and can model them in a variety of ways. Students understand the conceptual basis for the number systems – the relationships between and among whole numbers, integers, rational and real numbers. Students understand that the backbone of school mathematics is the real number system. They should be able to explain the reasoning behind the algorithms of rational number operations. They recognize the pervasiveness of proportionality across mathematical strands. Basic concepts related to rational equations, systems of equations and equalities. Rational, irrational and fractional equations and inequalities. Equations with absolute values, parametric equations, main solving methods.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- masters the fundamental concepts related to number sets and algebraic transformations and is able to interpret them in the context of school mathematics;
- understands the necessity of extending number sets;
- is able to solve percentage calculation problems using different methods and comprehends the key principles of teaching this topic;
- can classify, transform, and simplify various algebraic expressions;
- knows the solution methods for algebraic equations and is able to apply them;
- knows the solution methods for systems of equations and is able to apply them;
- knows the solution methods for inequalities and is able to apply them;
- knows the solution methods for systems of inequalities and is able to apply them.
