Course aims
To explain the role of communication in shaping people’s attitudes, values, and in developing practices and policies in environmental context. To introduce basic terminology and concepts of communication theory and explain their applications in the context of environmental communication. To give an overview of communication phenomena: dialogue, co-operation, democracy, conflict and conflict resolution, environment and journalism.
Brief description of the course
Topics: Environmental communication as an interdisciplinary research field. Introduction to different fields within environmental communication: introducing environmental topics to the public, decision-making, strategy building, public participation, conflict prevention etc.
The course gives and overview on the basics of environmental communication and these theoretical concepts are linked to case studies and examples. Using practical examples that address environmental topics in Estonian and international media are analysed.
The course consists of lectures and seminars (50%), smaller independent assignments (20%) and reading obligatory literature (30%).
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has an overview of the basics of communication theory;
- understands the importance of environmental communication and the challenges faced in communicating environmental information;
- is able to critically analyse environmental communication case studies;
- is capable of applying the most important environmental communication principles e.g. conflict prevention and solving methods, communicate objective environmental information.
