Course aims
In-debth overview of microbes in various environmental systems and their use in biotechnology
Brief description of the course
A comprehensive overview of microbial morphology. Environmental pressure on different microbial biosystems, their distribution in nature, role in food and energy metabolism. Normal microflora in different organisms. Pathogenesis, biofilms. Soil and water microbiology. Bioremediation. Food microbiology and microbes usage in biotechnology.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- knows microbial excistence in biofilms;
- knows modern methods in microbiology, bioremediation;
- understands of microbial usage in biotechnology;
- explains current development trends in systems microbiology and applies professional knowledge based on evidence (including critical evaluation of sources);
- relates the functioning of microbial communities to the topics of matter cycles, food chains, health and environmental sustainability and exemplifies the corresponding high school biology topics;
- solves more complex problems related to microbiology (e.g. water/soil quality, biofilms, pathogenesis, bioremediation), chooses appropriate approaches and argues the impact of solutions based on evidence;
- plans microbiological research/analysis activities based on the research question (including a database-based approach), uses digital tools and, if necessary, TI environments responsibly for data analysis;
- initiates and leads cooperation (within and between groups), valuing the contribution of team members and applying innovative and creative solutions when presenting results or solving problems.

Aine läbimiseks on vajalik inglise keele oskus B2 tasemel. Õppematerjaliks on ingliskeelsed teadusartiklid.
Aine raames toimub ka laboratoorne töö ja/või töö arvutiga.
