Course aims
To give an overview of general characteristics of living organisms, the tree of life and diversity of organisms.
To familiarise onself with Estonian nature, habitats and common species.
To have an understanding of relationships between organisms in ecosystems. Connestions of living nature with abiotic factors.
Brief description of the course
The subject is divided into three parts: 1)bacteria, algae, plants and fungi 2)animals 3)fieldpractice
1) bacterial lifeforms, characteristics. The importance and uses of bacteria
Algae, their diversity. Importance to humans.
Plants – anatomy of plant cell. Chemical composition of plants and life processes in plants. Anatomy of plants. Reproduction, its diversity. Plant diversity. Estonian flora.
Lichens – structure, reproduvction, life forms. Uses. Diversity
Mosses – structure, reproduction, diversity. Sphagnum mosses.
Gungi – Structure. Diversity and importance.
2) Characteristics of animals, animal cell and tissues, organ systems. Animal diveristy and system. Estonian fauna. Animals role in an ecosystem and connection with abiotic factors.
3) Excursions to field. Introduction of Estonian flora and fauna, different habitats. Practical fieldwork: herbarium, animal collection, preparation etc. Methods in getting to know and introducing nature to children.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- part of topics covered independantly;
- independent tasks in form of writing tasks and presentations that support material covered in lectures;
- independant tasks in fieldwork supporting fieldcamp activities.
