Course aims
The objective of course is to create conditions for understanding the aims, principles and content of nature studies and for acquirement of purposeful teaching methods.
Brief description of the course
From local study to science study – about the history of teaching nature.
General aims and principles of nature studies in the National Curriculum.
Aims, content and learning results of nature studies.
Components of biology, geography, chemistry and physics in nature studies. Integration of knowledge of different domains. Study methods: 1. To support attention and perception (management of observation, use of other senses) 2. To support memory and thinking (asking questions, managing a discussion, problem-solving, incl. experiments and other research activities). Formation of scientific concepts.
Social and physical aspects of the environment of nature studies (work in large and small groups; outdoor lesson and field trips). Means of nature studies (study literature, tools, experimental tools). Feedback and assessment in nature studies. Links to other subjects. Planning a lesson and (self)reflection.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- understands the role of knowledge of nature, and the role of skills and values connected with them in the development of pupils at the first and second stage of school;
- is familiar with the objectives of acquisition of knowledge of nature, study content and teaching inventory;
- is familiar with general principes of teaching the subject and are able to select and apply purposeful methods.
