Course aims
- To promote the mastering in skills necessary for field works in
ecology;
- To promote the mastering in skills necessary for distinguishing
plant communities;
- To support the development of skills needed to carry out
ecological research in different communities.
Brief description of the course
Field course outside Tallinn. In the field trips students will repeat
and learn more Estonian plants and animals in their natural
habitats. During the field course the participants will get to know
different plant and animal communities and learn about the co-
existence of plants and animals. Main methods used in plant and
animal ecology will be introduced.
Students learn to describe the vegetation of meadow and forest
and to compare the different communities. Environmental
parameters measured in the studied communities and found links
between the environmental and vegetation data. Studying
statistical analysis in the program PC-Ord. Participants study
terrestrial and aquatic communities of fauna and the possibility of
using the program R for statistical analyzes of data from the
animal communities. Based on the results and analysis, they must
present two reports at the end of the field course (flora and fauna
in a separate part).
Independent work bases in the preparation of practical work (tasks
in Moodle learning environment, including tests), practical tasks
during the field work session, a report compiling the results
obtained and evaluate the overall outcome.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- ability to recognize main species of different
communities;
- ability to distinguish between communities according to
species composition and general structure;
- skills to study and describe plant and animal
communities;
- skills to analyze results on study.
