Course aims
History of systems biology. Introduction to different branches of systems biology. Overview of systems biology today and its future directions.
Brief description of the course
History of systems biology and overview of early methods and techniques that led to the creation of the field. To give an overview of how to integrate data coming from molecular, cellular and other levels in order to investigate hor biological systems work. To demonstrate how building interaction networks utilising different kinds of data allows us to get a holistic overview of a particular system. Introduction to genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics. Overview of mathematical and statistical methods used in systems biology, introduction to basic modelling
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has an overview of the history of systems biology;
- is familiar with different branches of systems biology and will know which methods and techniques are used;
- understands the main statistical methods used in systems biology;
- is able to independently find and download various types of biological data from online databases and other resources.
