Course aims
To provide the student with a critical understanding of design for all principles and the latest practices with respect to a range of current and novel ICT solutions.
To provide the student with a real world understanding of the complex needs of older and disabled people when using ICT and people who use assistive technologies.
Brief description of the course
The course introduces the principles, practices, and evaluation of universal design and accessible UX.
Key topics include:
- Foundations of Accessibility: A Web for Everyone; People First.
- Design Principles and Best Practices: Clear Purpose, Solid Structure, Easy Interaction, Helpful Wayfinding.
- Presentation and Communication: Clean Presentation; Plain Language; Accessible Media.
- Universal Usability in Practice: Universal Usability; In Practice: An Integrated Process; The Future: Design for All.
- Guidelines and Standards: Accessible UX Principles and Guidelines; Mapping WCAG 2.0 Principles, Guidelines, and Success Criteria to UX Guidelines
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- explains and critically reflects on the principles of universal design and accessible UX, including their impact on people’s lives;
- applies accessibility guidelines (e.g., WCAG 2.0) and best practices to evaluate and improve digital systems;
- conducts automated and manual accessibility checks to assess conformance of web applications and services;
- analyses global trends in accessibility and anticipate future challenges and opportunities in designing for all.
