Course aims
To provide an overview of the content-based teaching of home economics in general education schools based on the STEAM learning principles. To create connections between the knowledge of different subjects through practical activities, and form skills to support students' systemic knowledge construction.
Brief description of the course
The basics of STEAM and relations to home economics education. Possibilities of content-based learning in the formation of systematic knowledge structures. Science-based and aesthetic approach. Physical, chemical, and biological processes in food processing. Practical activities to support a content-based approach in teaching.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- understands the basics of STEAM study and the connections with Home Economics education;
- is familiar with both STEAM and Home Economics terminology and uses them correctly;
- creates content-based tasks and chooses appropriate tools that support students' systemic knowledge construction.
