Course aims
- To acquire the ability to determine the most common wood species in growing Estonia and in the world on the basis of macroscopic features.
- Acquire professional vocabulary.
- Develop knowledge to distinguish between different construction materials and readiness to use them in your practical work.

Brief description of the course
First half: an overview of wood as a consumable material. Wood texture, defects, species, drying, storage, making wood more valuable, measurement and volume calculations. Writing an independent work on wood and trees in Estonian folk culture.
The other side: an overview of different metals, construction materials and their properties. Production and recycling of metals. Writing an independent work on metal and everything metal-related in Estonian folk culture.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- is able to visually identify domestic wood species;
- is able to recognize and classify wood defects;
- is able to assess the quality of sawn and timber material;
- can distinguish and determine the most common metallic materials
- knows the general technical and physical properties of metals;
- can choose a material suitable for practical work.
