Course aims
To create opportunities for the acquisition of the theoretical basic knowledge about therapeutic application of music and understanding psychological and physiological effect of music.
Brief description of the course
The topics addressed: the historical development of therapeutic use of music. The essence and definition of music therapy. Physiological effects of music. Psychological effects of music. Theoretical foundations of music therapy. Forms of music therapy. Principal techniques and methods of the application of music therapy. Active music therapy. Receptive music therapy. Areas of therapeutic application of music. Professional identity and ethical principles of a music therapist.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- knowledge about the history of therapeutic application of music and its current applications;
- knowledge about different therapeutic approaches and ability to differentiate between them;
- practical self-experience of the impact and effects of music and ability to reflect on one’s own experience;
- ability to choose therapeutic exercises to be conducted in a small group;
- ability to understand the opportunities of therapeutic use of music, developments and topical problems in society.
