Course aims
Discuss in lectures, seminars and practicums Western music history leading styles, genres and developments from middle age and renaissance to barock. To develop the ability to discriminate by ear stils of different periods, connections to other arts as well as become familiar with main expression tools; learn to know most important masters and their work from different periods (also by practical musicking).
Brief description of the course
Topics in lectures, seminars and practicums: introduction – origin and nature of music, ancient world, ancient greece, early christian music. Middle age and renaissance – multivoice music development; Gregorian chant; Notre Dame school. Middle age one/multivoice music. 14. century music. Franco-Flemish school (vocal polyphony). Barokk – terms and understanding of music; old vs new style, genres etc, opera. Händel, Bach.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- gains overview about Western music history, styles, genres, composers and main developmental trends [written exam];
- is able to recognize by ear different styles and knows important pieces [listening seminars];
- is able to use music history terms expressing oneself correctly orally and in written form as well as to compile interesting digital tasks [reading seminars and digital learning material compiling];
- is able to recreate middle age and renaissance music in group performance [practicums and concert].
