Course aims
The objective of the course is to introduce the student to the classical (diatonic) harmony.
Brief description of the course
Tonic and dominant (Structural tonic and structural dominant). Rhythm and meter in the classical harmony. Form and harmony. The dominant chords emerging from contrapuntal motion of the voices (V6, VII6, V7 and its inversions). Figuration: suspension. Pre-dominant harmonies: IV and II. Other contrapuntal harmonies: six-four chords, II7 and IV7. VI, III and other diatonic harmonies. Diatonic sequences. Diminished seventh-chord.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
Student who passes the course:knows the most important diatonic chords of the classical harmony,is able to add a harmony (counterpointing voices) to the simple diatonic melody,can perform harmonic analysis of a tonal piece (with simple modulation),knows the basic relations between harmony and counterpoint and harmony and form,can play simple harmonic progressions on the keyboard.
