Course aims
Forming an understanding of weapons study and drill, the principles of orienting and topography and first aid and the readiness to organise a field camp in a safe and sustainable way.
Brief description of the course
Drill. Historical overview of the development of line system. Managing units as lines on battle field. Physical endurance and solidarity. Traditions and ceremonies of defence forces. Drilling individual soldiers. Squad in serried ranks. Constitution of a squad. Intermediate stages between practical tasks start and end in lines, during which general skills of teamwork in a line are obtained.
Personal and squad equipments. Students learn about personal and group equipments, their function, practical usage and maintaining them.
Journey in a unit and the moving of individual militants on landscape. Students learn about and practice different ways of moving within the unit and as an individual militant, using signs and practising activities according to the gestures.
Putting up a tent and living conditions out in the open. Environmental protection. Students learn how to organise lodging in nature, prepare the area, put up tents, prepare the areas for cooking and hygiene. The impact of national defence actions on the environment. Preparing, erecting, and ending a training camp from environment protection point of view. Guaranteeing fire-safety and operation in case of forest fire.
Catering and hygiene in the outdoors. Organising catering outdoors is practised along with preparing warm food and using 24 hours food (dry food packs).
Orienting on land. Topography and orienting. Introduction to topography. Using maps in Estonian defence forces. Compass, magnetic azimuth, and direction angle. Orienting on map, orienting on landscape, using a hand-held GPS. Students learn to use a map and a compass on slightly and fairly fragmented landscape, pinpointing one's location, determining distances and indicating objects on different landscapes and light.
Taking cover and imperceptibly moving on landscape. Students practice different camouflages and how to move about without being noticed. They learn, why things are visible in different environments and light.

Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- knows the objective and study content of field camps;
- is able to plan and carry through the activities in field camps.
