Course aims
Forming the understanding of crises, conflicts, causes and characteristics of wars and the readiness to understand the specialties of international security environment.
Brief description of the course
International crises and conflicts supported by chosen examples. Means for exercising international politics. Mutual relations of countries in the 20th and 21st century. Threats to security. International security in the 20th century: world wars, cold war. Collective security in the 20th century: League of Nations, UN, NATO, OSCE. Nuclear era. Arms control.
Characteristics of armed conflicts and wars. Developmental phases and characteristics of conflicts. Prevention, management, and solving crises and conflicts. The notion of war. Military strategy and tactics as notions. Deterrence. Total defence. Territorial defence.
Contemporary international conflicts and managing these. Security problems in the 21st century. Asymmetric threats. International terrorism, spreading of mass destruction weapons.
Cyber security. Reasons and consequences of international intervention, international peace operations.
International military law. Objective and purpose. Application.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- knowsthe causes and characteristics of crises, conflicts, and wars and the methods used to prevent or manage them.
- knows the specialties of the international security environment of the 20th and 21 century, supported by chosen examples;
- is able to communicate the knowledge to secondary school students.
