Course aims
To create opportunities and prerequisites for orienting within the field of adult education. – to support the development of student preparedness for understanding and analysing the connections, problems and values of adult education, lifelong learning and adult learning in society.
Brief description of the course
Adult education as a field of activity and object of research.
Lifelong learning - an education policy concept. Lifelong learning: social, economic, political, education policy aspects. Prerequisites for the formation of the space and environment for lifelong learning. Overview of theoretical positions on adult education. Adult education and policy of adult learning in the education system: current status, problems and trends. Role of non-formal education in the formation of civil society. The idea of non-formal education and philosophical bases in Estonia and the Nordic countries. Position of non-formal learning in the adult education system. Policy and regulatory mechanisms of adult education. EU policy on adult education and future trends. Adult education in other countries (comparative aspects).
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- orients within the field of adult education;
- knows, defines and understands the social and educational functions of adult education;
- understands the role, principles and values of adult education in society;
- understands and analyses the connections and problems between adult education, lifelong learning and adult learning from a comparative perspective.
