Course aims
To create the prerequisites for understanding and applying the principles of modern mother tongue teaching and the skills for planning and organizing the teaching of listening, speaking and writing in the first and second grade of elementary school. To support the development of a theoretical background on the principles of teaching listening, speaking, and writing. Create a basis for acquiring practical instructions and specific techniques for developing students' listening, speaking, and writing skills. To direct to make sense of what, why, when, and how to teach.
Brief description of the course
The subject of mother tongue didactics, different bases, principles and directions for mother tongue teaching. Nature and structure of language, language classification, integration of language communication skills. Developing language skills. (Different) definitions of listening, importance of listening. A child with hearing difficulties in class. Organizing listening in class. Basic components of a speaking program and factors to be aware of in order to create one. Functions of oral language use.
Definitions and concept of writing. Purposes of writing and types of texts. Methods of teaching to write, different approaches to writing. A teaching method based on the writing process. Writing technique teaching. Teaching grammar and spelling overtly and covertly. Written communicative activities/assignments in class. Text types and language teaching topics covered in the first and second grade of elementary school, their teaching based on the principles of the new curriculum.
Throughout: Use of information technology and internet environments in the organization of teaching listening, speaking and writing.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- knows different approaches and modern principles of mother tongue teaching;
- feels the important role of the mother tongue and the importance of use-based teaching;
- can prepare and organize listening, speaking and writing tasks based on the text, topic and language use situation;
- uses creativity, own digital competences and the possibilities of information technology tools to promote students' native language skills.
