Course aims
To create an understanding of the role and responsibility of the school teacher as both a teacher and a guider of the development of the child, and to create prerequisites for implementing knowledge in fostering relations between students during and outside of the learning process. To create conditions for giving meaning to the role of the teacher.
Brief description of the course
Society and school. The role of the school and the teacher in influencing the realities of education. The class as a social group. The teacher as a role model and his/her behavioural strategy. Strategies of becoming familiar with and managing the class. Creation of a favourable learning environment and microclimate. Gender characteristics and taking them into account when teaching and communicating with students. Students' lifestyles and methods of becoming familiar with them. The role of IT in the lifestyle of the elementary school student. The role of the class teacher in school and with the parent as a cooperating partner. Models of the teacher's profession and professional development, and the path to becoming a teacher. Stages of professional development and factors that influence professional development. Attitudes and beliefs of teachers about their profession and about themselves as self-guiding learners. Values of teachers and the basis of professional ethics. Factors and opportunities in the (auto-)ethnographical approach and assessment that affect self-analysis which supports professionalism. Identity and dilemmas of teachers.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- is familiar with factors that influence the activity of a class teacher: the teacher and the school in society; the impact of the school environment on the learning and education process;
- is familiar with the class as a social group and is familiar with strategies for the management of the class;
- is able to implement flexible ways to manage the class and support the individuality of students;
- has the knowledge and skills to familiarise themselves with the students’ lifestyles and is able to cooperate with parents and other stakeholders;
- is familiar with the professional development models of the teacher and with the bases of professional teaching ethics;
- is familiar with the expectations of the role of the class teacher and is able to analyse their own work and professional skills, identifying their strengths and areas that need development.
