Course aims
Developing an appreciative attitude for working with children with special needs in the context of inclusive education at 1st and 2nd school stage. Developing readiness for informed activity in professional work based on ethical convictions through finding and rationalizing necessary information.
Brief description of the course
Special needs and society, approaches, motives and attitudes towards students with special needs. Curriculum and educational programmes, incl. individual learning plans for students with special needs. Categories of special needs in the I and II school stage: learning difficulties; behavioural problems, physical and sensory impairments, children with other languages, talented children. Identification, assessment and assistance to children with special needs in the I and II school stage. Protection and legal framework for SEN students. Cooperation with the support staff and their roles in learning activities.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- can distinguish between and describe the developmental peculiarities resulting from special needs and knows the primary principles of initiating cooperation;
- knows general tendencies of educational policy;
- knows the principles of adjusting and modifying studies in different fields of study;
- can formulate, present and justify relevant standpoints from his/her own viewpoint;
- has awareness based on ethical principles;
- has knowledge in planning, carrying out lessons and analysis systems (teacher’s workplan, lesson plan) in teacher’s work in supporting pupils with special educational needs in the context of whole-school learning support network;
- can notice and evaluate pupils who need help, initiate help in the context of one’s own work and networking taking into account pupils specific needs;
- knows and can use the principles of individual learning plan, knows the methods of adaptation in teaching.
