Course aims
Develop an understanding of the role of a primary school teacher as a teacher of subjects and as a guide of the child’s personality development, and to provide knowledge about the development of interstudent relations in the learning process and during extra-curricular activities.
Create an understanding of the formal education system of Estonia and the relevant legislation. Support the acquisition of knowledge of the school scheme and formation of the relevant practical skills and values. Create prerequisites for the proper functioning of the legislation regulating teaching and educational activities of the school and its teachers’ rights and obligations.
Brief description of the course
The role of the school and teacher in influencing the educational reality. School form as a social group. The strategies of getting acquainted with and managing the form. Rules and negotiations in creating beneficial learning environment and microclimate. Gender differences and considering these dissimilarities in teaching and communicating with students. Lifestyle of students and methods of acquiring information about it. The role of extracurricular activities, mass media and information technology in the lifestyles of elementary school pupils. The primary school teacher’s role at school. Primary school teacher and parent as the partners of collaboration. Conducting meetings for pupils’ parents and performance appraisals. Formal education system of Estonia and the relevant legislation. The requirements of pedagogues’ competence and vocational ethics. National curricula of basic education. Support the pupils’ development and study aid system. National supervision and self-assessment of the school.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- is familiar with the factors influencing the elementary stage teacher, the prestige of the teacher and school in the society; influence of school environment on teaching and educating process; influence of home environment on the child’s development;
- takes a school form as a social group and are familiar with form management strategies;
- is able to apply flexible ways of form management.and supporting the pupil’s individuality;
- has knowledge and skills of learning the pupil’s way of life;
- is capable to cooperate with the pupil’s parents;
- can orient themselves in the formal education system of Estonia, are familiar with its structure and use professional terms of education properly;
- has an overview of the legislative acts regulating the school scheme dealt with during the course, are able to find them and to plan teaching and educating activities on this basis;
- is familiar with the national curricula of pre-school institutions and basic school, and with the principles of drawing up and developing the school curriculum;
- has knowledge of supporting the pupil’s development, study aid system and school health care requirements;
- is familiar with the national external assessment system, self-assessment and internal assessment of the school.
