Course aims
To create preconditions for obtaining knowledge and practical skills on
collection development and management in different types of libraries;
To support the acquisition of an overview on the principle strategies and methods of long term preservation of information resources

Brief description of the course
Collections and collection development in different types of libraries. Planning of aqcuisitions and its sources. Acquisition module in an integrated library system; ELNET consortia and cooperationof libraries in acquisition of informationresources. Legal deposit copies, standard numbers. Organisation of collections and statistics. Management of collections and preservation. Preservation of information resources as a special field of library work and its functions. Storage conditions of information resources. Strategies and methods of preservation.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- knows the principles of the collection development;
- knows the principles of acquisition, sources and vendors of different information resources;
- has an overview on the organisation and management of collections;
- knows the principles of the long term preservation, its strategies and methods.
