Course aims
To enable the students to get an overview about the trends of publishing in the world and in Estonia in oder to orient amongst the different content providers and their production
To create preconditions for understanding publishing as part of creative economy and cultural industries
To introduce the phases and agents of publishing, the most notable publishing firms in Estonia and in the foreign countries
To create prerequisites for acquiring knowledge on the development of bookselling and printing
Brief description of the course
Publishing as part of the intellectual system of the society and as part of the creative economy. The structure and functions of publishing. Copyright issues in publishing. Different types of publishers and theor production, scholarly publishing. Trends in international publishing after World War Two. Costs of book production and pricing. Public book policy. Principles and centres of book statistics. Freedom of expression and censorship in the modern world. The development of printing. The special features of book trade and its channels.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- knows the trends of publishing, bookselling and printing and is aware of legal, cultural, economic and other factors influencing these activities;
- is familiar with the publishing process, its participants, phases and functions;
- is able to orient among the leading publishers active in different types of publishing, above all in scholarly publishing.
